Snowfall Beaded Hat with Joan

Snowfall Beaded Hat with Joan

3 Classes: Tuesdays February 18, 25 and March 3 6-8 pm

$45.00 plus materials

Beads as colorwork! That is what is unique about this hat. Instead of using beads to add bling to a lace pattern, the beads are meant to replicate the beautiful gradient yarns that we all love. Larger beads are used for this reason. Using beads for the colorwork actually frees you from the confines of other types of color knitting. Unlike stranded knitting, you can use more than one color in a row. And it isn’t intarsia!

Materials: 150-180 yards of sport weight yarn, #6 beads, US size 2 and 3 16¨circular needle, and size 3 DPNs,  1.25mm crochet hook, In-store download of Snowfall Hat by Susan Rainey, and normal knitting notions.

Required skills:  Casting on, knit stitch, purl stitch, binding off, and reading basic pattern instructions.

Please note: We require you to use yarn purchased from us for all classes. You will receive a 10% discount on all class supplies while class is running. You will pay the instructor directly on the first day of class., Please be prepared to pay with either cash or a check since our instructors mostly do not have the ability to take credit cards. Langfield Hat with Lee

Langfield Hat with Lee

3 Classes: Thursdays January 30, February 6 and 13 6-8 pm

$45.00 plus materials

Level: Advanced beginner

This hat employs a clever construction so that the hat is neither knit in the round, nor is it knit flat and seamed together.  Using strategic increases and decreases, and short rows in some sections, you build this hat in sections.  The most appealing part of this pattern is that gauge is not important.  You can use any needle size, any yarn and any gauge you want.  All you need to know is the circumference of the intended wearers head to knit a perfect hat!  While this hat really showcases self-striping yarn, you can also combine yarns, use that gorgeous skein of handpainted yarn you haven’t been able to find a project for, or use up leftovers.

Materials:  50 grams or so of whatever yarn you like, and the appropriate 24” circular needle for your chosen yarn, stitch markers and normal knitting notions, in-store purchase of the Langfield pattern on Ravelry.

Required skills:  Casting on, knitting, basic increases and decreases.

We require you to purchase class supplies from us. You will receive a 10% class discount on all class supplies while class is running.

Learn to fix mistakes with Lee

Learn to fix mistakes with Lee

1 Class: Thursday January 23 from 6 to 8 pm

$35.00

Level: Advanced beginner

Learn how to identify and fix your mistakes without having to rip out and start over!  Lee will show you how to fix dropped stitches, mis-crossed cables, change a knit stitch to a purl and a purl to a knit, and how to pull your knitting off the needles and rip out just the stitches you need, and wrangle the remaining stitches back on to your needles.  Free yourself from the tyranny of fear and let your knitting skills take off to the next level!

Students must bring a knitted swatch to class.  Cast on 40 stitches in a light colored, solid worsted weight yarn using size 7 or 8 needles.  Knit 4 rows of garter stitch, then, keeping the first and last 4 stitches in garter stitch, knit about 4” from the cast on edge.  Leave your stitches on the needle and bring to class.

Milet Mittens with Joan

Milet Mittens with Joan

3 Classes: Tuesday Oct 15, Oct 22 and Oct 29
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
$45.00 plus materials

The Milet Mittens are stranded colourwork mittens with folder cuffs featuring stitch patterns inspired by colourwork traditions from Norway and Latvia. Ribbing is worked on the inside of the cuffs for a snug fit that will keep cold winds and snow out. This pattern by Ysolda Teague will teach you Fair Isle or stranded knitting, how to catch floats, the idea of yarn dominance, how to manage your colors without tangles, and gusseted thumb construction. It's the perfect project to learn or master stranded colorwork, and probably the prettiest mitten I've ever seen!

Materials: Heavy fingering/sport weight wool- Three colors (C1: 40 yds, C2: 135 yds, C3: 75 yds) Berroco Ultra Wool fine or Elemental Affects Shetland or Erika Knight Wool Local. We do not recommend superwash wool for colorwork because it's too slippery for the colors to mesh together well.
Needles: Size 1.5 and 2.5 double pointed needles, marker tape, In-Store Ravelry purchase of Milet Mittens pattern by Ysolda Teague, and normal knitting notions.,

Frjokorn Steeked Cardigan with Lee

5 classes: Thursday Sept 26, Oct 10, Oct 24, Nov 14 and Dec 5
Level: Intermediate to advanced
$65.00 plus materials

Do you love the idea of a stranded cardigan but hate the idea of purlnig with two colors? If so, then this is the class for you. This sweater is knit in the round from the yoke down, sleeves are separated out and knit down after the body is complete, then the sweater is steeked. Steeking is a scandanavian method of knitting in the round, then cutting open your knitting to create cardigans and blankets. In this class, you'll learn how to manage two colors, read charts, study yarn dominance, and finally, in the last class, cut open your work and secure the edges. Finally, you will crochet a quick border and button holes and finish it off. This class is a lot of knitting (we allow two weeks between classes for that reason)-, and if you don't think you can finish the knitting before the last class, you probably shouldn't sign up, or you will miss the steeking class.

Materials: Main color: 2-3 "plates" of Plotulopi and a complementary fingering weight yarn held together, contrasting color:1-2 balls of Lettlopi, 8-9 buttons, US 10 and 10.5 circular needles, or size needed to get gauge and appropriate same sized needles for your preferred small circumference knitting, US H crochet hook, scissors, marking tape, stitch markers and darning needle.

Fine print: You will pay the instructor directly the first day of class. Please bring either cash or a check payable to the instructor. Yarn cannot accept a credit card payment for classes. Store policy requires you to purchase materials for all classes from us. Thank you for understanding our policy and not asking us to make an exception for you.

Medievil inspired needle felted tapestry with Neysa Russo

LEVEL: Complete novice to experienced felter

2 CLASSES  Sunday March 24th and 31st from 10 am to 3 pm, with break times built in for stretching and lunch. A 3rd session will be scheduled later to help students wet felt their finished tapestry.

Cost:  $125.00 includes materials

Interested in creating a large tapestry? Let’s do it!! March 24th & 31st from 10-3 at YARN in Waterbury, Vt. This magnificent scene is not the only design to choose from. Neysa will have several ideas for you, each may be modified to suit your personal tastes and desires. There will be homework…lots of homework… and we will need to meet a 3rd time in order to wet felt the tapestry as students complete the project.

Good vs. Evil, a traditional theme used throughout history to create dramatic tension, from ancient art and literature, to modern day movies and novels. This medieval inspired tapestry has all the elements necessary for a great story: action, animals, and people in motion. A tapestry this size does not come together over night, there will be homework. Neysa has some valuable tools she uses to cover the most ground quickly. Some students may finish sooner than others, so the third date, will be kept flexible.

No experience is required to take this class, beginners are welcome. The only requirement is ambition, some upper body strength, and of course, the time to complete the necessary homework.  Neysa will show you how to easily modify the scene to suit your tastes, making each students tapestry personally unique. An abundance of color choices will be available.

Please note: Class size is limited to 8 students. Payment will be required at time of registration to secure your spot. This tapestry is larger than our normal needle felting classes!

Intro to Double Knitting with Sarah Scully of Gage Hill Crafts

LEVEL:  Intermediate

2 Classes, Saturdays 1 - 4 pm March 23 and 30 (note three hour sessions!)

Cost:  $45.00 plus materials

In this two-part series, you will learn to double knit and make two small projects.

In Part 1, we’ll explore the basics of double knitting, understand how to read a double knitting chart, and practice knitting this double layer, reversible fabric.  You will learn to cast on and begin making a small coaster (knit flat) in class, and finish knitting it at home before Part 2.

In Part 2, we’ll learn to bind off, spend some time checking our gauge, and begin a slightly larger project, a headband knit in the round.

Skills required: You should be comfortable with knitting basics such as traditional long-tail cast-on, binding off, knitting and purling. It may be helpful, but not required, to have prior experience working with 2 colors of yarn at a time (such as in stranded knitting or 2-color brioche).

Materials required:

One ball each of two colors of Ella Rae Classic Wool (100% wool, worsted weight). Choose colors with a high contrast in tone (light and dark). Yarn must be purchased from Yarn VT.

Bring to class:

Knitting needles in size US 6 (4 mm) in your preferred configuration for knitting flat, and preferred configuration for knitting in the round. We suggest you bring a few other sizes larger and smaller as well so you can experiment with getting a nice double-knit fabric.

Stitch markers, scissors, tapestry needle for sewing / binding off.

To register for this class please call the shop at 802-2241-2244 or email us at lee@yarnvt.com.

Please note:  We require that yarns used in our classes are purchased from us.  Students receive a 10% discount on class supplies while the class is running. Students will pay the instructor directly on the first day of class, and should be prepared to pay with either cash or a check.
