Great Northern Yarn Haul kickoff party!

  • Yarn

The Great Northern Yarn Haul makes it's second appearance, and this year it's twice the size as last!  If you didn't participate last year, now's your chance to sample Northern NE's finest yarn shops. The idea is to visit as many yarn shops on the tour as you can, get your passport stamped along the way, support local yarn shops during the slow months of summer, and have some fun along the way.

We'll kick off the event at Yarn on July 7th.  Come on down, get your passport, and if you make a qualifying purchase, a great canvas tote bag proudly sporting this year's logo (a cute map of all the participating shops).  We have door prizes donated by Berroco, Brown Sheep and Knitting Fever.  We'll be offering seasonally appropriate light snacks and beverages.

THE ACADIA COLLECTION

Using only the un-dyed colors of Acadia, this collection of patterns is meant to inspire you with the elegant simplicity of the natural world.

Acadia is a lovely DK weight blend of tightly twisted merino wool, silk and baby alpaca.  Known for it's bounce and great stitch definition, it's a great yarn for both garments and accessories.

THE ALLIUM COLLECTION

The Allium Collection marries the mundane and the dramatic in a way that designer Grace Anna Farrow does best. The designs are elegant to wear and inspiring to knit. This collection uses The Fibre Co. Meadow yarn.

Meadow is a glorious heathery, heavy lace weight blend of merino, alpaca, silk and linen.  We use it for shawls and light weight summer garments.  Each hank is a generous 545 yards, so you only need two to knit an entire summer cardigan.

Stop in the shop to grab some summer inspiration.  These two trunk shows are full of wearable warmer weather projects you'll want to add to your wardrobe!  While you are here,. browse the other great Fibre Company yarns we stock.

Join us for Art Walk!

The December Art Walk is always such a treat.  Once again, we are thrilled to host Barb Whitchurch again for the 4th year.  Come check out her unique designs and find that perfect holiday gift, or treat yourself to some well deserved pampering.

Here's how Barb describes her work:

"Woolybear Artisan Jewelry (named after our St. Bernard) is designed and handmade by me in my home studio back in the woods of northern Vermont. (Well, “studio” is a kind word for a tiny corner just off the kitchen.) There I use semiprecious stones and vintage objects to create jewelry that is funky and feminine, with a bohemian feel. I also like to give a playful nod to beautiful objects from the past....

Much of my work is one-of-a-kind.  I love to incorporate interesting vintage and antique pieces into my necklaces.  Favorites include miniature penknives, mechanical pencils, perfume vials and buttonhooks. My knife necklaces have been universally popular over the years. I like to describe them as feminine and “edgy” (no pun intended). "

CustomFit Measuring Party!

It makes me sad to see how many knitters never wear the sweaters they have invested so much time and money into because, at the end of the project, the sweater didn't fit!

Designer, teacher and author Amy Herzog has come up with a system to help us knit perfectly fitting sweaters every time.  The first step is to understand your body and what your measurements really are.  In this session, Yarn. staff will take your measurements, create your free customfit account and coach you on choosing a perfect sweater yarn, all while enjoying the cameraderie of other yarn enthusiasts with the same desire to knit to fit.  We will have light refreshments and loads of encouragement.

You will leave with your personalized set of measurements:  bust, waist, high hip, mid-hip, low-hip, tunic length, bicep, mid-arm, wrist, shoulder, waist to shoulder, waist to hem, and more.  Yarn. staff will help you choose a yarn and a pattern to send you on your journey to knitting sweaters based on patterns generated to fit your unique measurements.  We will further support your sweater journey with free customfit knitalongs as fall approaches.

Booksigning and Trunk Show "Cast Iron, Cast On: Cooking and Knitting through the Seasons with Becky Herrick and Calley Hastings

  • Yarn

Announcing a new book written by two local Vermont authors! Cast Iron, Cast On: Cooking and Knitting through the Seasons is a collaboration between knitwear designer Becky Herrick and Calley Hastings of Fat Toad Farm with a unique format - the book is arranged as a monthly almanac with seasonally appropriate patterns (by Becky) and recipes (by Calley) for every month of the year.

From the authors: The book Cast Iron, Cast On was inspired by our ties to our local community. Calley and I are both involved with local farms, local markets, and we love the sense of community this brings to our lives. When we agreed to write this book together we were talking about how this sense of community really crosses all other lines. Whether crafting or cooking knowing the source of your supplies and ingredients helps complete the circle. Sometimes Calley goes out of her way to source ingredients that aren't available locally. Other times I stumble across a gorgeous farm-spun yarn at a local store which barely covers the cost of shearing the farmer's sheep. Whatever the inspiration or limiting circumstances to a project I think the key is to be mindful of our actions and our impact on others. I hope this book inspires makers to make do with what is available when possible, to thoughtfully source ingredients when available, and most of all - to reach out and connect with people no matter what our similarities and differences may be.

We will have copies of the book on hand for purchase, and the authors will be here with samples of both knitted garments and maybe a recipe or two!  Please join us for this fun event!

Meet fiber artist Suzan Condon and have the chance to view her amazing needlefelted landscape creations.  Here's what Suzan has to say about her work:

I came by this art form  in December of 2014 by way of a dear friend who taught me how to felt a ball. From that first gathering and forward I have fallen in love with the forgiving nature of wool, in its raw and dyed form,  and creating pictures from it that come from my heart. I am a mountain woman having only lived in one other state, WVa.  I was born near White River, I have always felt the the water flowing and forest and mountains surrounding me. What I felt comes from within me. I never know what will come when I begin. I hope you enjoy what arrived over the months since December. Each was made from the heart through the hands, with one needle and wool from hard working Vermont women's sheep or Alpacas.  (Very few pieces have anything else in them).   Suzan Courtemanche-Condon
