Learn to knit with Lee

LEVEL:  Complete Novice

6 Classes, Saturdays Jan 27, Feb 3, 2/10, 2/17, 2/24, 3/3  10 am to noon

Learn all the basics of knitting in 6 lessons.  In the first two sessions, students will learn how to cast on stitches, knit, purl and follow a basic pattern while knitting a wash cloth.  Week three will be dedicated to recognizing the most common mistakes, and learning how to avoid them or fix them.  In week four, we begin to explore knitting in the round, the basis for all hat and sweater knitting.  We'll cast on for a simple hat and learn how, over the next two weeks, to  increase, decrease, read simple charts, maybe complete some simple cables, and finish off using double pointed needles. At the end of the last class, students will learn how to finish off their hat with a big fluffy pom pom (optional).

Required skills:   An open mind and enough time to practice every night!

Cost:  This class is being offered through the Montpelier Senior Center.  You need not be a member, or even a senior, to attend.  Call them at 802-223-2518 to register.

Glaswegian Lopi Sweater with Lee

to Mar 15

Glaswegian Lopi Sweater with Lee

LEVEL:  INTERMEDIATE

5 Classes, Thursdays 2/8, 2/15, 3/1, 3/8 and 3/15  from 6 pm to 8 pm

Learn how to knit all over again!  Plotulopi is an unspun pencil roving yarn, and is like nothing you have ever knit before!  Perfect for lofty warm garments without a lot of bulk, it's a good choice for traditional scandanavian and icelandic stitch patterns.  In this class, we will explore knitting with a very light touch, learn to read colorwork charts, traditional yoked sweater construction, and because it's the twentyteens, we'll throw in some short rows for fit and shaping around the neckline.

Necessary skills:  Working in the round on double pointed needles or your preferred method of small circumference knitting in the round, knitting, purling, and committing to knitting every night to keep up with the class and finish the cardigan over the 6 week class period (note:  there are 5 classes with a skip week).

Cost:  $65.00 plus materials

Materials: Download the pattern "Glaswegian" by Amy Christoffers from Knitty.com,  4 colors of Plotulopi, Size 4, 5, 6 or 7  32" circulars and double pointed needles, or size needed to get a guage of 21 stitches per 4", stitch holders or waste yarn, marker tape or supplies you typically use to keep track of your place on a chart.

A note about needle size:  I needed to go down to US 4 and 5 needles to get the proper gauge because I found I needed to knit much more loosely than usual while getting accustomed to this unusual yarn. I suggest you bring a variety of needle sizes to the first class, which will be dedicated to swatching and learning the properties of this yarn.

Learn to Knit Continental Style with Shelley

Level:  Advanced Beginner

1 Class, Saturday     1-3pm     March 3rd

Cost:  $25.00 - Students will pay the instructor directly the first day of class.

This workshop is designed to teach you to correctly tension your working yarn in your left hand to make it easier to simply "pick" your stitch rather than wrap it, as you do when holding your yarn in the right hand.   Knitters using this method swear that it's faster, easier to work with two colors in fair isle patterns, and less stressful on wrists and other Carpal Tunnel-prone areas.  While most students find the knit stitch easy to master pretty quickly, many find their technique falls apart when they attempt to purl.  Shelley has developed a method of continental-styling purling that is sure to make it easy for you to learn it too!

Bring a light solid colored yarn to class, and appropriate needles.

In these two sessions, Shelley will help you demystify the process of knitting at a very loose gauge with the specific intention of washing your finished knitting to shrink it to a dense felted fabric.  You will be expected to knit between classes to ensure that you complete the project during the two class sessions.

Materials:  Either 500 or 750 yards of feltable worsted weight yarn, depending on how thick you want your hat to be.  We recommend Ella Rae Classic wool, Plymouth Homestead or Berroco Ultra Alpaca.  24: size 11 circular needle, stitch marker, and normal knitting accessories.  Pattern to be supplied by instructor.

Note:  We require students use yarn they purchase at our shop for all classes.  Students receive a 10% discount on all class supplies while the class is running.

Needle Felted Sheep or Peacock Mug Rug with Neysa Russo

Level:  Novice to Experienced felter

1 class - Sunday, September 17     10 am to 2 pm

Participants in this class will choose to make either a peacock or a sheep mug rug. You will learn how to sculpt using felting needles, and also gain insight into the basic principles of wet felting in a way that is simple and accessible. No animals are harmed to create these adorable mug rugs!

The peacock project offers flexibility in color choices and design shapes for the brilliant feathers making the body of this project exciting.

The sheep is simple and adorable. We will needle tiny locks of Blue Faced Leicester wool to cover the head and neck, lending a lot of authenticity to this character.

These projects are divided into two parts. During the first part you will learn to use the barbed felting needles to form the head. A simple poking motion will shape the contours and special features, sculpting them into a three-dimensional shape. The second part of each project will walk you through the creation of the body, which will lie flat and be wide enough to accommodate a mug. Using the felting needle, the body is decorated and wet felted for durability.

Both the beginner and experienced needle felter will have fun making one of these simple projects!

Custom Fit Sweater Workshop with Lee

Level:  Advanced Beginner

5 Classes, Mondays 6 - 8 pm     Jan 23, 30, Feb 13, 27 and March 13

Are you afraid to knit a sweater?  Let Lee walk you through every step, from taking your measurements and swatching to insure a perfect fit, casting on, negotiating a pattern that is custom written JUST FOR YOU to sewing up your finished project.  You can choose from a set of pre-designed sweaters by Amy Herzog, or design your own using her user-friendly templates.  This sweater is guaranteed to fit you! In the first class, we'll take your measurements, talk about the importance of gauge,  talk about good sweater yarns, (and bad sweater yarns, too!), measuring your gauge swatch, and choosing your pattern.  The remaining four classes will be spaced far enough apart to leave you time to finish.  BEWARE:  Adult sweaters are alot of knitting and you'll need to commit to knitting every single day to insure that you finish by the end of class.  You will be expected to knit, wash and block your gauge swatch prior to the first class.

Because of the high level of personalization in this class, we are limiting it to only 5 students.

Cost:  $60.00 plus materials (pattern is included in class fee)
